What is the difference between Swayambhunath and Boudhanath?

Boudhanath is a massive, flat structure surrounded by Tibetan monasteries, while Swayambhunath is a hilltop stupa with a Newari blend.

Why choose Boudhanath Stupa?

Choose Boudhanath to explore an extensive Tibetan Buddhist community without climbing steep stairs.

Boudhanath is ringed by over 50 active Tibetan Buddhist monasteries (gompas). The flat kora path makes circumambulation easy for all mobility levels. The plaza features bustling thangka shops and rooftop cafes for observing the crowds.

Is Swayambhunath harder to visit?

Yes, Swayambhunath requires climbing a steep hill, whereas Boudhanath is entirely flat.

Boudhanath sits at a base elevation of roughly 1,350 to 1,400 meters. You simply walk clockwise around the stupa, keeping the monument to your right. Swayambhunath involves climbing long, steep staircases to reach the main dome.

Can you visit both in one day?

Yes, many guided tours combine both UNESCO sites into a single day trip.

You can hire a taxi or book a combined tour. Boudhanath is about 6 to 7 kilometers northeast of central Kathmandu (Thamel). A taxi between sites takes time in Kathmandu traffic, so plan for a full-day outing.
