Getting there
Traffic from central Kathmandu can be heavy. Leave extra time for transit.
| How | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car: Taxi from Thamel or central Kathmandu | 25-35 mins | NPR 500-700 | Haggle before getting in, or use ride-hailing apps like Pathao and InDrive. |
| Bus: Local bus or microbus from Ratna Park or Jamal | 45-60 mins | NPR 30-50 | Very cheap but can be crowded, dusty, and confusing for first-time visitors. |
| Walk: Walking from Pashupatinath Temple | 30-45 mins | Free | A popular spiritual route combining two major heritage sites, but involves walking along busy, dusty roads. |

Practical packing advice
Dress modestly for your visit. Wear pants or long skirts, and ensure your shoulders are covered. Slip-on shoes or sandals are highly recommended, as you must remove your footwear frequently to enter the monasteries.
Kathmandu roads can be very dusty. Pack a dust mask or scarf for the taxi or bus ride. The giant white dome is heavily reflective during the midday sun, so bring a sun hat and sunglasses.
